Answer:
If you have a USB charging cable for your phone, you can plug your cable into the charging station to charge your phone.

If not, the charging station will not work with your phone.

The cord does not need to be attached to the tablet, but it needs to connect with the charging station to charge you tablet placed on the station.

I have an iPhone4S and the new iPad. Will it charge both of these items at the same time? Can you leave them in their protective cases? Are there bright lights on the station that would be disruptive to someone if they were sleeping in the same room with the item? Thanks for the reply. Terri

Yes, you can charge both iPhone 4S and the New iPad with the dock connector cable comes with your New iPad and docking station.

However, you have to remove the protective case on the phone first.

There is no bright lights on the station.
